Seeing the God-Winks in Life on the Farm

Jannah Mast is the wife of Evan Mast, mother to two sparkly-eyed girls, and farmer to one Tuffy-cat, eleven bouncy goats, 30-some friendly pigs, and 60,000 squawking chickens. They live in beautiful Juniata County on a farm on the top of a hill. On a typical morning, you can find her ensconced in a corner of her couch, cup of coffee in hand, often with at least one of her two daughters. Brew’d Awakening is her blend of choice, though these days almost any kind will do, as long as it is sweet enough :)

Jannah fills her days with caring for their farm and their children. Together, they raise pasture pork to sell, as well as raising meat chickens for live markets. She has a small-scale goat milk soap business and is adding tallow balm to her line of products.

Show up in the summer and she will most likely have gardening dirt under her fingernails and be shelling peas, picking blueberries, or slicing pickles. When she is not helping the Farmer bale hay or chasing pigs out of the neighboring church graveyard, Jannah enjoys a good book, baking exquisite things (though doing all the dishes afterwards is not very high on her list), and doing laundry, but not the putting away part :) Jannah has always struggled with depression, and in recent years has found that looking for God in the small, everyday things is one of the best ways to combat that, such as the chug-chug of a washer, giggles from the sandbox, or the budding of new leaves. They are her small God-winks throughout the day and keep her seeing and choosing joy. She believes motherhood is her current, most important ministry and has many opportunities to share God’s love throughout her day with her two girls. She relishes opportunities for conversations with her 3 year old daughter Emma, who loves asking questions. A basic conversation may be as follows:

“Where does the sun go at night, Mama?”

“God puts its nightcap on (“what is a nightcap?...”) and tucks it into bed. The birds singing goodnight is God’s bedtime song to the sun.”

“Just like Mama and Daddy do for me because they love me?”

“Just like Mama and Daddy do for you.”

As a family, Evan and Jannah search for every opportunity to go camping, and take at least one overnight canoe trip each summer - last year with their 4 wk old baby girl. On any given warm evening, they will most likely be outside sitting around a campfire, singing or toasting marshmallows. Jannah’s ideal life is one of slow days and simple pleasures, with some good friends and deep conversations thrown in for good measure.
